Christmas is already here. Of course, it is the time of year that everyone has been waiting for, but it is also the time of year that can be most damaging for our health because we drink too much and eat too much unhealthy food.

Once Christmas is over, all this can have unwelcome consequences and we must be careful especially if we have some type of digestive disorder, but also if we have some other type of condition, such as diabetes or heart problems.

Healthy eating is not difficult

As we have said before in the pages in this blog, we must realise that healthy food is essential for our health. Generally speaking, healthy eating should be based on using unsaturated fats (olive oil, oily fish) rather than on unhealthy fats. When it comes to cooking, it is best to use the oven and steam food rather than fry it. We should also make sure we include green vegetables as an important part of our diet.

What is important at this time of the year when the celebrations begin with all the hearty lunches and dinners is not to forget about the good dietary habits we follow for the rest of the year. Something light for starters

We should avoid heavy Christmas starters and begin our special lunches and dinners with a light soup, some dried fruit and nuts or oily fish such as smoked salmon, fresh anchovies or anchovies in oil.  

Fish is best for the main course

Although most of the red and white meat we typically eat at Christmas is cooked in the oven and so is healthier, a good piece of fish is best for our health and is also very traditional. We could opt for sea bream, monkfish, hake or sea bass with some vegetables. This may help us to balance nutrients and calories with possibly eating too many Christmas sweets.

There is nothing better than a good end to the meal for pudding

There are some very healthy alternatives to the traditional Christmas sweets at this time of the year. Pineapple, for example, can be exquisitely prepared to “decorate” the table at this special time of the year. There are other healthy and more creative options.  With a little imagination and with different types of fruit, we could make carpaccios, fruit salad or delicious fruit juices which will allow us to enjoy the celebrations with lighter food and much less risk to our health.
